In May of 2012, 17-year-old Johnathan Hoffman was living with his grandparents in their Michigan home. His sister was suffering from brain cancer and his parents moved to Arizona with her for medical treatment. Fred and Sandra Layne knew Jonathan had problems of his own. Several brushes with law enforcement and a close call after a drug overdose. Johnathan had been using K2 or spice… a synthetic marijuana. His grandparents ran a tight ship and were determined to help him clean up his life and graduate high school. He was on probation after being caught with drugs in his car, and as a part of that, he had to undergo regular drug testing. On the day you’re going to hear all about, he failed a drug test and was probably going to be jailed. He wanted to run to his parents house in Arizona, but Sandra Layne said no. She told her husband Fred to go walk the dog, and retrieved the gun that he had no idea she had bought and had hidden. She opened fire on her grandson. Hitting him multiple times. Somehow, he was able to temporarily get away, and called for help.
